The Strijp R and Bos­rijk neigh­bour­hoods in Eind­hoven show­case two dis­tinct approaches to con­tem­por­ary urb­an design, blend­ing indus­tri­al her­it­age with new dwellings.

Strijp R has evolved from a tv pro­duc­tion site into a low-rise res­id­en­tial area fea­tur­ing approx­im­ately 500 homes. Vari­ous Dutch archi­tec­ture firms have con­trib­uted designs for row houses and detached vil­las. Cent­ral to this trans­form­a­tion was design­er Piet Hein Eek. His pres­ence began with a work­shop and res­taur­ant housed in a former ceram­ics fact­ory, but his influ­ence extends through­out the neigh­bor­hood, where he has played a key role in adapt­ive reuse pro­jects and new archi­tec­tur­al developments.

Neigh­bour­ing Bos­rijk, in con­trast, is loc­ated on a former air­port plot and was designed as a “res­id­en­tial land­scape”. This neigh­bor­hood pri­or­it­izes sus­tain­ab­il­ity, with homes care­fully posi­tioned among exist­ing trees and green spaces. The low-dens­ity hous­ing, innov­at­ive mater­i­al choices, and eco­lo­gic­al design prin­ciples cre­ate a seam­less trans­ition between built and nat­ur­al environments.
